A new month means fresh opportunities to connect with your email subscribers. 

We’ve gathered March newsletter examples to spark ideas for your brand. Each contains nuggets for rejuvenating and keeping subscribers’ interest, giving more reasons to visit your site.  

Notice that most messages don’t revolve around or even mention a sale. Instead, they use holidays and seasons as a jump-off point to relate to what subscribers are experiencing in life. 

(No shame in running a sale, by the way. A Shopify discount can provide a needed shot in the arm.)

#1 Welcome spring 

Whether March follows the script of “in like a lion, out like a lamb,” it’s a time of transition for the Northern Hemisphere. 

Days are getting longer and warmer. Nature is reawakening. Spring represents renewal, even if we recently turned over a new leaf in January. 

Here are some ideas for a spring newsletter: 

  • Feature “in-between season” products that help with the weather change 
  • Debut a new or returning spring collection 
  • Run a sale to mark the beginning of Daylight Saving Time (March 10)
  • Highlight seasonal favorites for the Spring Equinox (March 19)
  • Give suggestions or tips for spring cleaning

  1. The top-five angle. We love lists, especially when they’re narrow in focus. 
  2. A tone-setting intro. Bonobos recognizes March’s unpredictable weather patterns and follows suit. 
  3. The product overviews. Kudos to the packaging: A photo, short description, and preview of colors/patterns.

#2 Get travelers ready for spring break 

We debated whether to tuck spring travel under the overarching spring newsletter bucket. But then we noticed how many brands board the spring fever train. It deserves extra attention. 

Spring break is the first significant travel season of the year — a time for winter-weary folks to escape to warmer weather and sunny skies. In 2024, we’ll also see a surge in atypical travel locations. The total solar eclipse on April 8 will draw spectators across spots on its “path of totality” throughout North America. 

How can your brand help travelers be ready for their getaway? What travel-friendly products do you have in stock? Any packing tips up your sleeve?

Skip Hop’s email recognizes that spring is also a time for road trips.

What we like: 

  1. Clever copy. An enjoyable email read is possible with short and snappy text.  
  2. The lifestyle hero image. Skip Hop sets the tone with a happy toddler in the back seat. 
  3. Product recommendations. The brand rounds up products to protect your human cargo and keep your vehicle as tidy as possible. 

One last idea regarding spring travel: Consider those opting for a staycation. How can your brand help make their vacation better?

#3 Bring in the green for St. Patrick’s Day 

St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a massive holiday for ecommerce compared to other occasions. However, household spending for the March 17 cultural event has steadily increased. 

The National Retail Federation reported that 61% of consumers celebrated in 2023; plans involved: 

  • Wearing green (80%)
  • Making a special dinner (31%)
  • Decorating a home or office (26%)
  • Attending a bar or restaurant party (25%), private party (15%), or parade (15%)
  • Hosting a party (12%)

Maggy London latches onto the green attire route.

What we like: 

  1. Festive accents. The brand embraces the green and shamrocks without going over the top. 
  2. A clearly stated promotion. Maggy London wastes no time in broadcasting the sitewide sale. 
  3. Prominent call to action (CTA). “Shop the Sale” is as direct as they come. Also, did anyone else’s eyes jump to the button first?

#4 Celebrate International Women’s Day

On March 8, the world comes together to salute women’s achievements with International Women’s Day. Any brand that joins in should approach it with the same respect as they do for any other cultural commemoration, like Black History Month

Celebrate womanhood by: 

  • Highlighting products from women-owned businesses
  • Sharing stories of social or economic progress, or trailblazers who have left a mark
  • Promoting women’s well-being
  • Donating to a program that serves female-focused causes, such as gender equality

#5 Help with Easter preparations

Hippity, hoppity, Easter’s on its way! (March 31, to be precise.) That means your email marketing should be, too, if you didn’t start in February. 

For brands that cater to families with children, this is your call to ramp up efforts. Households with kids spend much more on Easter than those without them. Higher spending cuts across all categories — food, clothing, gifts, candy, decorations, flowers, and greeting cards. 

You could quickly build an Easter campaign of three emails: 

  1. Best-selling products for Easter
  2. Shipping deadline reminder
  3. Easter blowout sale 

Or take a cue from “corner store” Foxtrot.

  1. Intriguing subject line. “What’s in your Easter brunch basket?” is followed by the supporting preview text, "Because ours is full of mimosa and candy.”
  2. Playful copy. It makes for a light and enjoyable read.

#6 Hype things up with March Madness

If you want to go off the beaten path with a March newsletter, turn to the American NCAA as your guide. The March Madness basketball tournament can be a springboard for any brand; you don’t need to be a basketball-focused company to make it work. 

Here are a few ideas to get in on the hype: 

  • Launch weekly “mad deals” throughout the tournament timeline
  • Promote sports-related products, relevant attire, or items suitable for watch parties
  • Run a small bracket contest that pits your products against each other, inviting followers and subscribers to vote for each round until there’s a winner

  1. Eye-catching hero image. GIFs are perfect for grabbing attention quickly. 
  2. Image-copy ratio. Balance is critical to a palatable, engaging email design.   
  3. Easy-to-find CTAs. Yeti places buttons in all the right places, providing direct routes for subscribers.

#7 Show respect for Ramadan 

There are universally commercialized holidays like Christmas, and then there are holidays that require a more culturally sensitive approach. 

Ramadan — one of Islam’s holiest months — is not an opportunity for the masses. If your brand has Muslim roots, a sizeable audience that celebrates the religious holiday, or you sell relevant products, go for it. 

It begins at sundown on March 10 and ends at sundown on April 9. Ensure email messages support Ramadan’s traditions and values of prayer, spiritual reflection and growth, fasting, self-discipline, and community bonds.   

Here are some ways to honor Ramadan: 

  • Wish subscribers “Ramadan Kareem” or “Ramadan Mubarak”
  • Highlight ritual-related products, such as foods for pre-dawn meals or modest attire
  • Offer discounts on festive clothing, home decor, gifts, or sweets for the closing Eid al-Fitr celebration

United Arab Emirates-based luxury fashion store Tryano sent multiple Ramadan emails in 2023. Here’s one of them.

  1. The opening message. Addressing “you and your loved ones” sets the stage for what’s to come: clothing for the entire family. 
  2. Clothing by category. Organizing CTAs around women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing makes for easy navigation.
